What Every Woman Should Know Before Hiring a Makeup Artist | Bergen County Photographer
Wearing the right makeup for the right event can be tricky. While planning for a portrait session, a lot of women worry if their makeup is going to look good on the final images. If it is a Bar/Bat Mitzvah, even more since there is no repeat.
So I asked makeup artist Delia Gubelmann how to choose the right person to work with you. Delia is not only an amazing makeup artist, she is also an eyebrows specialist and passionate about skin care. Here are some of the questions I asked her:
Flavia Markiewicz: Tell us about yourself.
Delia Gubelmann: My name is Delia Gubelmann, I started in cosmetics about 11 yrs ago with Bobbi Brown in NJ, was transferred to NY after a year of working for the company! I worked for Bobbi for 7 yrs and loved it! Teaches you to give your client the most beautiful version of themselves, love empowering women and making them feel good! I have been a freelance makeup artist since then, which has given me great freedom and creativity!
FM: Why hire a professional makeup artist?
DG: I would highly recommend booking with a professional makeup artist for best results, knowledge and professionalism!
FM: How much should someone budget for make up?
DG: Budgeting for your personal makeup varies, yet I do believe there’s certain corners you can cut, and certain ones I would recommend spending a little more money on...Lip gloss, mascara and even some foundations are great from the drug store, but I would definitely recommend spending more on skin care, because the two should always work hand-in-hand!
The price to hire a makeup artist varies a lot but usually starts at $85-100.
FM: How early does one need to book?
DG: Book as soon as you know the time and date of your special day to guarantee an appointment with a talented artist, don’t wait until the last minute!
FM: Is doing a trial run important?
DG: I feel it is very important to do trials only for Brides. You wouldn't want to be going over "a look" on your big day, and just makes the day easier! Normally an artist will show a client their work first, before booking a trial, if you are not a bride.
FM: Do you have any tips?
DG: My tips would be to focus on skin care and brows, everything else is secondary! Once you have an even, polished canvas (with good skin and polished brows) everything else will fall into place.
