Posing Families | Bergen County Photographer

As a portrait and Bar/Bat Mitzvah photographer I often have to photograph families. This sometimes can be a little tricky since moms get self conscious, kids don't stand still and dads have no patience for the photoshoot. Here are a few things that I do to get good images while keeping everybody happy:

  1. Make sure everybody is relaxed. Shoulders, mouth, fingers, the whole body should appear soft and light.

  2. Do posed photos first, then let everybody lighten up and encourage playful interaction to capture a few candid images.

  3. Encourage everybody to get close together and show affection.

  4. Arrange faces on different levels forming triangles. triangles create visual interest and flow on an image.

  5. If mom is feeling self conscious about her body, use the kids to cover parts of mom’s body she might not want seen.

  6. Have each family member touch another person. this shows connection within small family units and display warmth.

  7. Make sure the mail people in a family are grouped in the center (think parents, grandparents) and build everyone else around them.
