Photo Editing Software | Bergen County Photographer
So, you took your picture and now you’d like to edit it. What do you do? Do you need Photoshop? Lightroom? Something else? What?
You probably have heard that Photoshop is the way to go. Maybe, but today there are a lot of powerful options in the market and depending on your workflow you may be better off using something different. Or even combine different editing software to achieve your creative goal.
I myself, use Photoshop and Lightroom. on fact most of the time I used just lightroom. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom is an editing software that is actually very powerful. It helps you catalog all your photographs, and it is a non-destructive editing software, meaning it saves all the alterations you do on a photograph in a different file. Adobe Photoshop is an imaging and design software that not only is used for photo editing and compositing but also to digital painting, animation, and graphic design. In it, you are modifying the image itself. Lightroom does not have all the features as photoshop such as layers, but they work very well together. You can edit a photo in Lightroom and open it in Photoshop directly from Lightroom in order to do more complex editing. When you save your work in Photoshop, you go back to Lightroom where the updated image automatically appears, and your original version is saved.
Adobe Photoshop Elements is less expensive than Photoshop and also more limited. It has a simpler design and is targeted to users that require fewer features and not as many complex options as Photoshop.
Another option for photo editing is GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program). GIMP is a free image editing software that can be run from anywhere, cloud, external drive, or local folder without the need to be installed into your computer. GIMP has some of the same features as Photoshop such as layers and other basic photo editing like cropping, adjusting brightness and contrast, resizing etc.
One more option for editing software is ON1 Photo Raw. ON1 Photo Raw combines features of Lightroom, Photoshop and a bit of Photoshop Elements. It is a non-destructive editing tool and similarly to photoshop it uses layers and also uses sliders like Lightroom. ON1 Photo Raw also allows you to cull and organize your images like Lightroom.
These a just a few examples of editing software available out there. There are a lot of other options, all of them with their pros and cons. Adobe Photoshop is the industry standard and if you are a professional or even a strong hobbyist you would probably like to use Photoshop at some point.
