Lighting 101: Shooting at High Noon | Bergen County Photographer

Shooting at noon is very tricky. The sun is shining high, creating hard shadows and making people squint. To go around that, we can do a few things.

  1. Find an open shaded area, such as under a tree or against the wall. This keeps the light even avoiding hard shadows.

  2. Turn peoples back to the sun. With their faces away from the sun, your subject will not squint. you may need to add some fill light with the help of a reflector or other lighting equipment to fill their faces.

  3. Use a diffuser placed between your subject and the sun. The diffuser will soften the intensity of the light having an immediate impact in the quality of light.

This image was shot on open shade with a reflector to fill light in my model’s face.
